TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
-
Alter tiles are made from white cement, recycled grey cement, stone dust, fine sand, gravel, water, and mineral oxide pigments.
They do not contain resins, synthetic polymers, or artificial additives. The mix is rooted in conscious material choices and natural processes. -
Tiles are hydraulically pressed at approximately 1,700 PSI. Larger slab sizes are hand-poured.
All curing happens naturally using water and ambient temperature. The process avoids heat-based kilns and chemical accelerants.
-
Each tile is pre-sealed at the factory with a single layer of moisture barrier. The finish is breathable, matte, and natural to touch. Additional coats are recommended after installation depending on the space and use.
-
Yes. The tiles are suitable for a range of floor conditions:
Interior floors require 1 coat of penetrating sealer.
Wet interior floors may need 1 to 2 coats, along with anti-slip coating if required.
Exterior floors require 2 coats and reapplication every 12 to 18 months.
Stair risers and treads are compatible when sealed properly.
Vehicle areas and driveways are not recommended, as the material is not rated for vehicular loads.
-
Item desYes. The tiles can be installed on a variety of wall surfaces:
Interior dry walls do not need sealing unless extra stain protection is required.
Wet interior walls such as bathrooms or basins should have 2 coats of sealer.
Kitchen backsplashes should be sealed with a food-safe solvent-based sealer.
Shower walls must be sealed and well ventilated with waterproof grout.
Exterior walls need 2 coats of UV-stable sealer and should be resealed every 18 months.
-
Yes. All tiles are factory-sealed once, but most applications will require additional sealing based on usage:
Interior dry zones can remain unsealed.
Wet areas, floors, exteriors, and high-traffic zones must be sealed post-installation.
Reapplication schedules vary by environment, especially outdoors.
-
Yes. Alter tiles are ideal for boutique retail, galleries, and other commercial interiors with moderate to high footfall.
Use 2 coats of industrial-grade sealer and tight grout joints for durability and performance.
INSTALLATION GUIDE
A step-by-step guide for professionals and project teams working with Alter tiles.
-
No. Alter does not offer installation services.
We recommend working with a qualified tile installer who has experience with cement-based or natural stone surfaces.
This ensures the tiles are installed correctly, sealed appropriately, and perform as intended over time.
-
Alter tiles can be installed on most level, stable, and clean substrates, including:
Cement screed
Concrete
Moisture-resistant plywood (for wall use)
Plastered and primed masonry
Fibre cement boards
The substrate must be fully cured, free of dust or oils, and capable of bearing the weight of the tiles. Uneven floors or walls should be leveled before installation.
-
Use a high-performance flexible cement-based tile adhesive, such as C2TE S1-grade or equivalent.
Avoid ready-mix or lightweight adhesives. Always follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions for mixing, open time, and curing.
-
No. Alter tiles are pre-sealed and should not be soaked.
Before installation, simply wipe each tile with a clean, damp cloth to remove any surface dust.
-
Yes. Back-buttering is recommended, especially for medium and large-format tiles.
Back-buttering is the process of applying a thin, even layer of adhesive to the back of each tile before placing it.
This step ensures full contact between the tile and the substrate, reducing the risk of hollow spots, cracks, or weak adhesion over time.
We recommend applying adhesive both to the prepared surface and to the back of the tile for best results, especially in wet areas or high-traffic zones.
-
Use non-sanded grout for joints under 3 mm and sanded grout for wider joints.
We recommend maintaining tight joints (2–3 mm) for a clean finish and better long-term performance.
Avoid epoxy grout unless verified compatible with sealed cementitious surfaces. -
Yes. All tiles are factory-sealed once, but post-installation sealing is essential:
Apply 1 to 2 coats of penetrating solvent-based sealer
For wet zones and exteriors, use a UV-stable or anti-slip topcoat if needed
Allow 24 to 48 hours for full curing before use
-
We recommend sealing the tiles once before grouting to protect against stains, and then again after grouting once the surface is cleaned and dry.
This two-stage sealing process prevents grout haze and preserves the finish. -
Yes. Alter tiles can be installed in wet zones with the right preparation:
Use a fully waterproofed substrate
Grout with care and seal thoroughly (2 coats minimum)
Ensure proper ventilation to avoid prolonged moisture buildup
-
Use a wet saw with a continuous diamond blade rated for concrete or stone.
Cut slowly and steadily to prevent edge chipping. Always wear safety protection.
-
Use only pH-neutral cleaners. Avoid acidic, bleach-based, or abrasive cleaners that could damage the sealer or surface.
For regular maintenance, use a damp cloth or mop with neutral soap.
